Fabyan Windmill

Today did not go as planned. The shoot at the skateboard park was cancelled. My skater kid had his car vandalized and couldnt make it. I dont know the rest of the kids well enough to drive an hour to see them. It would have been a perfect day for it too! We have all summer so it will have to wait.

With nothing else planned I made a last minute trip down to the Fabyan Forest Preserve which was much closer to home than I anticipated. Its famous for this Dutch Windmill reproduction. Its about as close as authentic as they come here in the U.S.

It was built by a German craftsman in the 1850's. It was moved a few miles down the street and renovated by Lucas Verbij, a third generation Dutch Windmill maker. He traveled to the Netherlands to obtain the authentic timber and gear work. The restoration was completed in 2005. The Windmill now sits on the east side of the Fox River.

It wasnt as exciting as the action of a skate park, but definitely interesting and educational. And it was a nice day to be outside!
