Art Work

Wednesday is the day we do expressive art in my class. Today we looked at art work by Jackson Pollock and then decided that we could do something almost as impressive! The children that I teach are all very special learners and we went for a total sensory experience complete with light projections on the wall and lots of banging and shaking noises to produce some wonderful patterns.

What we did was line a large heavy frying pan with paper and then splatter brightly coloured paint onto it - huge amount of fun for everyone whether you were dodging the paint or trying to aim at the right place. The magic ingredients were 8 marbles of varying sizes which were then added to the frying pan. Time then to shake, swirl, rattle and bang the frying pan as much as possible to get those marbles moving - with a restraining hand at the ready to stop the marbles and paint going everywhere.

The result was some truly beautiful and intricate patterns in vibrant colours. All inspired by Flo Longhorn's wonderful book "Art for Very Special Learners" - a lifeline for anyone needing inspiration in expressive, sensory art.
