It was Michelangelo that said "The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark."
I spent the morning in Cirencester, which is by far my favourite town in the area. Until now I had not been inside the Cirencester Parish Church of St John the Baptist. They are very busy renovating parts of the church and much of it is covered by scaffolding and sheets of plastic. Today, due to the absence of workmen, I ventured in.
The church is very beautiful inside. My blip is part of the ceiling just inside the Fan-Vaulted South Porch and dates from about 1500. Other parts of the church date back as far as 1150. The church is one of the largest parish churches in the country, and is sometimes confused with the former Cirencester Abbey, which was situated nearby. There has been a church on this site since the early years of the Christian era.
The people who have worked over centuries in this church, and continue to work on it today, certainly could not be accused of setting their aim too low!
Michelangelo also said "If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it wouldn't seem wonderful at all."
I am quite sure we are surrounded by people who go quietly about their daily work, end never speak a word of how difficult they find it.
