A Day In The Life

You set the alarm. Closed your eyes.
Slept. Woke up. Got out of bed. Dragged
a comb across your head. You found
your way downstairs and drank a cup

of coffee and suddenly it's there.
Despair. It's been handed to you
on a plate along with the toast.
And it's hard to swallow. All you

can do is hold your head in your hands.
You're not even sure why you feel
this way. You heard the news today
oh boy. All bad. It could be that.

And your neighbour made the local news.
He didn't blow his mind out in a car
but he did hang himself a week ago.
You didn't really know him. But. Nevertheless.

So here you are, with your head
in your hands. Nibbling toast. Hoping
someone would love to turn you on. But
that big E chord is a crescendo

growing in your head. All days end.
Oh boy.

the real thing
