Stepping Up For Nature - royGbiv

A green entry in colour and by nature!

Back at the start of March, the RSPB launched it's most ambitious campaign thus far, asking all of us to Step Up For Nature.

The idea is simple really.

It's easy to blame governments for failing to reach their biodiversity targets for 2010, but what did you actually do about it? Conservation groups can't do this alone. Governments can't do this alone. We all know in our day to day lives, if someone doesn't pester us, very soon we fall back into a comfortable routine, and let someone else worry about things, whether it be mundane (pairing the washed socks) to the global issues.

This is simply isn't good enough any more. No one is asking you to march on 10 Downing Street. But you can make a difference.

Actually get around to turning the washing machine down to thirty degrees C.

Go back and turn that light off after you leave the room.

Why not start a blog, my fiancé did .. InMyImagination.

Make one of your Blipfoto entries about what worries you about the environment, or simply show it off, and tell people why you want to show it off!

Join one of the conservation groups. It costs hardly anything. They all give an entry gift, they all send you an excellent glossy magazine! Go on click a link: RSPB, WWT, BTO. If you are already a member, why not "step up" and do some volunteering. This doesn't have to mean chopping down reed beds, or ringing birds, but you can do it from your laptop. I've just become a letter writing volunteer.

Become a social scientist! Take part in the next RSPB Big Garden Bird Count. If you can't wait that long, take part in the BTO Garden Bird Watch Survey. It's great fun, especially at this time of year. Half hour of your time, cup of coffee in hand, and watching the garden birds, does that sound like hard work?

The Dawn Chorus is one of the amazing sounds in nature. But one bird singing alone would be a sad, beautiful, but somehow lonely sound. Be part of a human Dawn Chorus. Add your voice to hundreds of others, and then, perhaps, and only just perhaps, those who can make a difference, will stop in their tracks, and listen.

Thank you.

About this photo.

I had this photograph in mind weeks ago, and tried to get the birds to take the hidden seed from various shoes and Wellington boots but with no success. This being the green day of the ROY G BIV Challenge, I thought I would give it one more go.

I was sat in the hide/shed for an hour and a half, with no luck. One or two near misses. I was literally minutes away from giving up and using the emergency blip of some Ivy or a Greenfinch, when the Nuthatch arrived and posed beautifully for me! They never let me down!
