Road works

As a proffesional driver, road works are the most consistent annoying thing I encounter, apart from some people. This particular lot on Guild Street, are an example of how not to do it.
This is on a one-way stereet beside the station and bus station, and is a particularly busy area, obviously. Last year this part of the road, which is actually an old iron bridge, received extensive refurbishment, which included strengthenimg said bridge, and relaying of new cobble stones.
It is/was a wonderful peice of road being 3 wide lines in width.
Now some pea brain in the council has decided to widen the pavement at the pelican crossing point to the railway station, thus reducing thids section to only 2 lanes. So from the traffic light it is 3 lanes for about 15 - 20 feet, then 2 lanes for 10 feet or so, then back to 3 lanes.
Clever? I don't think so.
Traffic jams and accidents are bound to happen in the forseeable future.
