THREE THOUSAND YEARS AGO....

I am used to handling old porcelain and pottery but something 3,000 years old? No. I have posted a picture of this beaker before together with a fake Roman jug, but I did not know anything about the beaker at the time. Since then I have done a lot of research.

It is almost certainly Neolithic, probably made by the "Beaker People," who some believe were immigrants from Iberia. They would have been involved in the last stages of building Stonehenge.

The only way I can account for Himself owning such a thing is that his father, in his younger years, was a zealous archaeologist. He went on digs all over the world and on a lot on home territory as well. He did not, however, leave any notes. If he did, they were separated from the beaker and never found. The only other things known to be his are some bone needles found in Orkney. His second wife was a well known archaeologist as well.

The Roman bits and pieces posted earlier were collected by Victorian ancestors, not him.

So there we are. It is a very heavy object and weighs over two pounds or .90 kgs. It is awesome to touch, to see where the potter carefully made the design and to connect over the millenniums to the person who made it. He is probably an ancestor of all of us.

It is the thing I wanted to photograph today because we are surrounded by dark, swirling mists and alternate downpours. I wanted to make the edges of this pic misty as well but did not know how, other than iPhoto and that isn't subtle enough. RIP Johnny Walker.

For the record: 13 C. Rain and fog, Day 4. Humidity 74%.
