This is a passage from an article. I had to read it for English. It compared the judgement of character to the Socratic theory of the four humours. I thought it was brilliant. Being fascinated with all things philosophical and medical( in a nutshell- the ancient Greeks), the metaphor for human character was just that- philosophical and medical. I also thought his arguement that you can see the true character of a person on the sports field was true. Fascinating stuff.....
The Greeks were fond of games
But they were fonder still of thinking.
And thinking led them to the theory of the humours.
As science, the theory of the humours is nonsense.
As a metaphor for human character, I know no better.
