Your local castle

Perusing the OS map of the area I noticed that there was marked an iron age broch about a mile away as the crow flies. So I had the weans booted and suited and off for a wee wander in the woods.
Turned out that the woods themselves were a very good walk and whilst I was expecting a few mossy stones remaining o of the broch I was pleasantly surprised with a very well preserved bit of architecture. There were too many people at it and too much snow to get into it safely so that will appear here another day. One of the ramblers we met pointed us toward the ruins of Torwood Castle, again I was not expecting this. This was built in the 1500's. We also walked over the route of a Roman road, place is alive with history. The woods themselves look like a good place as well for introducing Callum to some off road mountain biking.

I've passed through the village of Torwood often and seen a few banners proclaiming "save our woods". Apparently these are commercial forests, but they are so lovely they surely are worth preserving, it's not as if they are that big either. It would be a shame if this was clear felled.
