Cardboard Palm Seeds - ( or not )
The amazing plant (Zamia Furfuracea) which produces these seeds, is said to be native to eastern Mexico. Someone gave the plant to us years ago, and we always thought it was native to Florida. At any rate, it is a mildly threatened species, so I am glad to be nurturing it. (Well, leaving it alone basically helps it a lot, as I have no green thumb.)
The article says the seeds, which are hidden within the thick leaves of the plant in large pods, are poisonous to animals. Someone needs to tell that to the Mockingbirds who have thrived on this plant's seeds for years.
{Edit: After much looking, I am thinking, but not sure...that this is another type of this plant. One which was used for arrowroot powder and has edible seeds. It is so hard to tell from online photos however. and I'm still confused. This plant does not 100% seem to fit any of the descriptions.}
