THE NEW ERA
Well, it was a last minute decision to venture up to RAF Leuchars in light of the final days of Tornado F3 operations. Taking over, is the most sophisticated type on strength in the Royal Air Force, the Eurofighter Typhoon.
So it was a walk to the beach, a brisk 2 mile walk through woodland in clear blue skies. It wasn't long before the action started.
Not only is it the final days of the Tornado F3, the forefront of Air Defence in the United Kingdom for the last 25 years, but the end of an illustious squadron; 111(F) Squadron who stand down on the 22nd of March 2011. This also marks the end of Northern QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) with the F3 at the realm. Taking over is 6 Squadron, The Flying Canopeners.
As pictured above, the rich blue squadron markings relly stand out as this twin stick variant (known as a T3) lands against a stormy dark sky.
So as the famous saying goes, I counted them all out and counted them all back before another prompt walk back to the car. unlike my arrival, the weather was anything other than pleasant, as the hail battered against my already weathered face.
Thankfully a new friend had a hot tea waiting for me on base! Thank you!
