What is this snow again?!!!

said one of my Saudi students when I met her on the way in to the Language Centre today. A quick reply about the fate of small north-sea islands and the vagaries of the jet-stream prompted the next question 'How do you know? How do they know? They (the Council) spread salt last night'. So I asked her if she ever watched the weather forecast, to which her answer was a wry smile and a shake of the head.

But I must admit that, even with a warning, today's weather came as a bit of a disappointment to me too.
