What happened to the spray paint ?

This is sophisticated 19th century Graffiti found during the renovation of the Old Barn, circa 16th century, just outside Trefeglwys in Mid Wales.

It's the translation in roman numerals that bowls me over together with the care taken on the serif typeface.

So, what's the story behind these scratchings?
