Mull at last!
One of only a few glimpses of Mull since I arrived. Early this morning it looked stunning with sunshine bringing out the best. Didn't last.
The island in the foreground is Maiden Island. There are various legends attached to its naming, none very cheery.
Perhaps the most enduring seems to be that Muireadhach or Murdoch, a fearsome warrior, was in love with Mhairi, the daughter of a local tradesman. A jealous would-be suitor was also in love with Mhairi and while Murdoch was away at war, he cast aspersions on her chastity. Murdoch felt that to prove her chastity she should be tied to a rock on the island by her hair, at low tide. If her hair broke and set her free, she was unfaithful and he could punish her. If her hair proved strong enough that she remained tied to the rock, then her fidelity was proven but she would drown. The tide of course came in, the water lapping over her head proved her innocence. The witches chair or ducking stool all over again.
