Frieze/freeze in Hexham
It was the U3A Singing for Pleasure group today. I introduced them to a new song (to them) called the storm. Music by John Hullan and words by Adelaide Procter. It was fascinating to read up about these Victorians who were well known in their day but who have sunk into relative obscurity. Adelaide was Queen Victoria's favourite poet and wrote the words of the Lost Chord. She was very involved in helping the poor and died of TB at 38. John wrote music for 3 operas by Dickens and was a great advocate of musical education.
Out into the streets of Hexham late afternoon, in search of a blip. It was freezing! I settled for this unusual frieze on the HSBC building. Why was the frieze commissioned? What is the significance of the cherubs on a bank? I did not find much to help me on the internet, apart from this entry from the Public Monument and Sculpture Association.
You have to look up to see sights like these.
