Termites or Wood Boring Beetle Larvae?

And you thought the aphids were up close and personal! Today I was looking at the moss on a tree and zowie! What a find! I think they are termites or wood boring beetle larvae, but I could be wrong; please correct me if I am. I had to go back to the car for my close up rings, but I think it was worth it.

The alternative was this photo of a crow in flight. I decided the bugs were way cooler.

edit: termites do not eat living wood so the vote is on the beetles.
