Are we doing any experiments?

This is the refrain that greets me when this class walks through the door. We do experiments practically every time I see them but still they feel they have to ask. Here we are heating an aluminium rod using a bunsen burner to demonstrate the conduction of heat. They love bunsen burners! Just after I triggered the shutter release the mixture of magnesium powder and match heads in the hole on the left of the bar exploded. The pupils were enthralled; I was just worried in case the camera had been damaged.
