Abandoned Barge - Ash Lock Nr Aldershot

The construction of Aldershot Military Camp between 1854 and 1859 gave the Basingstoke canal a new lease of life. In just 3 years, 20,000 tons of building materials & supplies were transported by barge to Aldershot. And barges similar to this would have been utilised to transport Bricks for foundations, timber and deal boarding, slates, paving stones and iron pipes were followed by oats for the stables, then door-frames, glass, soap and beer.

This rusting hulk is located nr the junction of Government Rd & Camp Farm Rd.
